Kamal Chawla, 80, is a cardiologist and pioneer of the Indian community in Chicago. The interview includes discussion of his initial guilt over not returning to India but eventual acceptance by his family and feeling that the US is now is home. He recalls childhood memories of the violence during the partition of India and having to flee from present-day Pakistan with his family. He discusses being instrumental in the creation of the first Indian professional and community organizations in the city after seeing the need. Other topics discussed include: differences in medical education in the US and India, the restriction on imports in India, his love of travel, singing, and tennis.
