Shamiya Ghogha, 20, is a newlywed who is adapting to life in America. The interview includes discussion about her recent move to Chicago from India and her efforts to learn English at the Indo-American Center where she takes classes five days per week. Madhoodlica Dear of the Indo-American Center, a native speaker, helps translate questions and supplies Shamiya with answers based on their side conversations in Gujarati. Shamiya discusses coming from a town called Jawahar Nagar in Vadodara, in the state of Gujarat, where she lived and worked on her uncle's buffalo farm. She talks of her life on the farm, her arranged marriage to a young Indian man from Chicago, her practice of Islam, and her daily life in Chicago with her new large extended family.
