Badri, 75, and Pramilla Taparia were among the first Indians to move to the United States in the mid-1960s. Badri is a retired obstetrician-gynecologist and his wife, Pramilla, raised their three children. The joint interview includes discussion of their families in India, Badri’s skills being in high-demand and Pramilla learning English from popular television shows. They discuss the difficulty of building friendships in the workplace that were more than surface level and their unsuccessful attempts to return to India. Other topics discussed include: the conveniences of American life, the change in immigration over the 1970s and 1980s, the importance of family values, and American race relations.
