WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 I first came to the United States when I was 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:05.000 11 and 12 years old when my father was transferred 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.000 to Manhattan for two years, and then the second time 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:14.000 I came was in 1980, for an MBA at the University 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:18.000 of Chicago. I would basically say there have been three 00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:21.000 big elements that have had a big impact. One of 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:23.000 my initial and early bosses at the Leo Burnett Company. 00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:28.000 They have basically driven a lot of my success. The early ones 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:30.000 were basically saying, "Learn how to work in a white 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:33.000 man's world." The older ones, basically taking gambles when I 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:36.000 said, "Let's go try to do something like this." I 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:41.000 think the University of Chicago has had a major impact, because in effect it shocked me 00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:43.000 to realize I wasn't that smart. When I came here, 00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:46.000 I thought I was, like, really smart. And I think 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:53.000 the third was, sort of, figuring out how would my wife do--sort of-- 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.000 make things work. You know, my big learnings 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:01.000 have been be true to your roots, which is what 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:04.000 I have. But recognize that the nice thing about roots, 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:06.000 it gives you wings. So you can take risks, you can do all kinds of 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:12.000 stuff. You should initially take as many chances as you 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 possibly can. Have great gratitude for the people who give 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 you chances. Give yourself chances by not being too hard 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000 on yourself, and then when you are fortunate make sure you give those chances back.
